Why we prepare

Approach the Chalice with faith, humility, and love

In the Orthodox Church, preparation for Holy Communion is more than a checklist—it is a turning of the heart toward God. We prepare through prayer, confession, fasting as guided, and reconciliation with others.

Use this page as a gentle companion. If you are unsure what applies to your situation, speak with your priest—pastoral guidance is part of the Church’s care for you.

A simple rule of preparation

Four steps to prepare—with gentleness

These steps are a practical way to gather your attention, examine your heart, and ask for God’s mercy before receiving the Holy Gifts.

01

1) Set aside time

Find a quiet moment the night before (or early the same day). Turn off distractions, make the sign of the Cross, and begin with gratitude.

02

2) Repent and forgive

Ask God to reveal what needs healing. Forgive those who have hurt you, and seek forgiveness where you have harmed others—so your heart is not divided.

03

3) Keep the Church’s guidance

Follow your parish’s practice for fasting and confession as your priest directs. Preparation is personal, but never private—it is lived in the life of the Church.
