Prayers for daily Orthodox life
Morning & Evening Prayers
Begin and end the day with thanksgiving, repentance, and trust in Christ. Use these prayers as a gentle rule—adapted to your strength, with attention and peace.
How to use this page
If you’re new to a prayer rule, start small: make the sign of the Cross, stand quietly, and pray with attention. You can read the prayers aloud or silently. If you miss a day, simply begin again—God receives even a little offered with sincerity.
A simple daily rule
Core elements (morning & evening)
These building blocks are common in Orthodox prayer books. Use them as a framework, and add or shorten as needed with humility.
Begin with stillness
Stand quietly for a moment. Make the sign of the Cross. Ask God for help to pray with attention.
Thanksgiving & offering
Thank God for life, protection, and every mercy. Offer the coming hours (or the day that has passed) into His hands.
Repentance & mercy
Confess your sins to God with simplicity. Ask for forgiveness, healing, and a renewed heart.
Intercession & remembrance
Pray for family, friends, the sick, those who suffer, and the departed. Remember the Church and the world.
Prayers you can return to

Choose a short set and keep it consistently. Consistency, not length, is the beginning of a stable prayer life.
Morning prayers (brief rule)
Use this as a starting point. If you’re able, add your own words of thanksgiving and any prayers from your prayer book.
1) Opening
Make the sign of the Cross and say: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2) Trisagion prayers (short form)
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3x) Glory… now and ever… O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us… Lord, have mercy. (3x) Our Father…
3) Psalm verse
O God, be attentive unto helping me; O Lord, make haste to help me. (Psalm 69:1 LXX / 70:1)
4) The Jesus Prayer
Pray slowly (for example, 10–30 times): Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
5) Closing
Ask for God’s blessing on your day, and remember those you love. End with: Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
Evening prayers (brief rule)
A short way to end the day with repentance, gratitude, and peace. Keep it gentle and honest.
1) Opening
Make the sign of the Cross and say: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2) Thanksgiving
Thank God for the day’s mercies—seen and unseen. Offer your work, your failures, and your hopes into His hands.
3) Examination & repentance
Quietly recall the day. Where did you fall into anger, pride, distraction, or neglect? Confess simply and ask forgiveness.
4) Intercessions
Pray for those you encountered today, for the suffering, for the sick, and for the departed. Ask God to forgive and bless all.
5) Closing & rest
Pray the Jesus Prayer a few times, then entrust your sleep to God. End with: Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
